Mobile telecoms equipment maker Huawei has opened a new research and development centre in Dublin that is expected to create 50 jobs by 2016.
The move is part of the company’s investment in R&D in Ireland, which will total €35 million in 2015. Huawei has R&D centres in Dublin, Cork and Athlone, with the first of these opening in 2011. The new office will assume the lead role.
The new centre is located in the IFSC, and will bring the number of people employed at Huawei in Ireland to 120.
It will be tasked with research into business innovation, network services, cloud and customer experience.
“Each year, Huawei invests at least 10 per cent of its global revenue in R&D. The opening of our newest Dublin facility highlights our long term dedication to investment and opportunities in Ireland’s technology sector, “ said Zhou Hong, president, European Research Institute at Huawei.
“The facility will tap into Dublin’s growing clusters of cloud and technology businesses, nurturing future talent and providing additional new opportunities for highly-skilled professionals.”
The news was welcomed by Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton, who described it as a great boost to plans to create a world class ecosystem for scientific research here.
